CHULA VISTA – Saint John’s Episcopal Church has entered into a partnership with Episcopal Community Services (ECS) beginning this August. Due to declining enrollment, Saint John’s Episcopal Parish Day School closed in June after 67 years of operation leaving the educational buildings vacant. The church community is pleased that God has provided a new avenue of ministry through this partnership. ECS will invite children to the school campus for participation in its Head Start child development program. With this new partnership, ECS will provide a high quality educational experience to families in the immediate community who subsist at or below the federal poverty line.

“Saint John’s is excited to be a part of this opportunity to minister to people in our community,” said Claudia Dalrymple, senior warden of the congregation.

Beginning with the 2017-2018 school year, Saint John’s will house ECS Early Head Start focusing on children six weeks to three years of age and their families. Services there will include parenting classes, individualized plans for children, and transition services for children moving onto preschool.

“We are so pleased to partner with the community at Saint John’s in making these valuable services available in such a lovely setting,” said Lesslie Keller, CEO of ECS.

Saint John’s has a rich tradition of helping those in need in the South Bay. From a blanket drive to Thanksgiving food bags, to Toys for Tots, feeding those involved in a homeless outreach program called Friend-to-Friend, and a monthly food drive, Saint Johns’ church members understand that their deepest call as followers of Christ is to help others. “. . . For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me.” (Matthew 25: 35-26).

Saint Johns’ community looks forward to this partnership with hope that the relationship with ECS spurs new avenues of building community.
