The Service Ministry Group of Christ Church Coronado coordinated a four-week food drive to collect goods for Episcopal Community Services’ Head Start families. The results were astounding: over 1,200 canned and boxed food items were collected, as well as over $700 in grocery gift cards and donations.
Twenty-one volunteers arrived at ECS’ City Heights Center to sort and pack bags filled to the brim with holiday foods. Two shopping carts borrowed from VONS were used to deliver goods to three separate sorting stations.
Volunteers quickly sorted through mountains of canned corn, boxes of stuffing mix and various other items. Using a suggested “packing list,” the corps assembled over 80 bags. The youngest volunteer then carefully placed hand-decorated votives in each bag, accompanied by a Thanksgiving prayer in both English and Spanish.
Everyone played a big part in this outreach project. Some people collected food, some sorted, the youth group made candles – we just all pitched in because we wanted to make sure as many families as possible would enjoy a nice Thanksgiving,” said Sarah Shealy-Stump, who organized the group’s project. “We set out all of the collected goods on the altar at church so everyone could see how great this effort was. It was quite breathtaking!”
